Marae Recount
Last week on the 1st and 2nd of May Room 7, Room 5, some teachers, and some parents stayed the night at the Arahura Marae. When we were there we lined up at the gate. I was excited to see what the inside of the wharenui looked like. When we got inside the marae I was surprised because it looked so different than I thought it would. There was a man called Jerry who was a local at the marae who told us some of the stories about the carvings. We went to the marae because we were learning about staying at a marae. I was very nervous to say my mihi so I just wanted to get it out of the way. I did it.Looking For Pounamu
We walked down to the Arahura River to look for pounamu. Jerry came with us because he knows what pounamu looks like. He told us to not look for green but to look for a blue and crusty white colour. We had to have our eyes skinned so we could find the hidden pounamu. I was very amazed at how much people found pounamu and how big some of the pieces were. I didn’t find any pieces of pounamu I just got my shoes covered in sand and my shoes got satched! A lot of people got excited because they thought they found pounamu but when they checked with Jerry he said that it wasn’t pounamu.
Evening Rotations
Later that night we did evening rotations. First, I played inside sports with Phaedra and Adrian. We played a game called rats and rabbits. Some people were rats and some people were rabbits. If they called rats the rats would try and tag the rabbits before the rabbits got to the end. After that I did the technology challenge with Miss Ireland. Breanana, Sapphire and me made Cooper into a taniwha but we lost the competition.
Walk to Mahinapua
The next morning we packed up all of our things then went and had breakfast. I had nutri grain and some corn flakes. When we were done having breakfast we left for the walk which was called Lake Mahinapua. We got a sheet that had pictures of plants on it that you had to find. I was in a group with Luken and Kayden. We found all the plants pretty quickly so we didn’t need to look out for the rest of the walk. When we got to the end we had some food and got marshmallows. The walk led to Lake Mahinapua. We went on the walk because at Lake Mahinapua is where there was a battle and there is a carving at the marae the represents that war.
Personal Comment
If I had a chance to go on a marae I definitely would. Thank you to the cooks who prepared all the kai we had at the marae. Thanks to the parents who drove us to the marae and helped supervise us.
